Literature Text
Dear you,
this is just to say that you are beautiful;
that the earth you stand upon is as old as time
and you are not, for you are simply a moment
a star shining sand speckled pillar of brilliance
for which we make up stories to tell our children.
I, too, began the journey of scholarhood ripe with
opportunity,
perhaps too many
good intentions, a loaded spark rather than a
breathing ember, looking up & out for the scorching
radiance that lay just below the skin;
This is not to say that yours will bear any likeness to
mine or that you are governed by any relevant principles,
only that we share more than you might think
—the present is a gift to us from the invariable past,
from us to the inevitable future,
to be held without expectation except to live vicariously
through the blissful momentum of experience. Even if
it doesn't mean much, I'll strike meaning like a match in
the eyes of a stranger, and isn't that all we can really
ask for? To leave it all better than when we arrived,
I'll leave the pickings of morality to you, know that you've
gotten this far already and you'll get there eventually,
when then is now & now is then
for now, you are this moment
and there will never be another quite the same
Sincerely

to know that we are not alone
I swallow words like I swallow tea;
some part of my brain composed of every image
that has ever made me realise I'm alive (salt, flowers,
streetlights weeping in the rain, foam and lace and dust)
- this part is addicted and constantly craves a bitter, frothing
tapestry of language. It's an eternal burning desire
for new ways to put together letters and empty
space - I want that wine, that sweet and strong
and heady wine that tastes of everything on earth,
everything that humans can feel and do and love
and hate and touch and breathe; I want that song
whose drumbeat is humanity, whose melodies are
smudges of ink and dazzles of electrons, whose

The Way I See It
Beyond the train window,
vague impressions of buildings
fly past,
but they might as well be
mountains in Colorado.
I can see Christmas lights
best when they’re tangled;
they’re like fireflies,
glittering
in all their splendor.
A silhouette
is all I need to know
about a person;
I see no blemishes.
I’ve always wondered
why height, weight,
skin color,
or disfigurement
ever mattered to anyone.
We are
perfect
in our imperfections.
You see,
you may see the forest
for the trees,
but I see it
inches at a time,
and though I sometimes
mourn my loss of sight,
I find the world is
wondrous
the way I see it.
